Leadership is something you take

Leadership is hard work. Picasso died at 91 years of age, having produced an estimated 50,000 pieces of art. He famously said: “Inspiration may come, but it has to find you working.” He produced an average of 550 pieces of art annually for his whole life — 1.5 pieces daily! Like Picasso’s copious work ethic, leadership demands deep dedication, effort, and sacrifice.

To be an effective leader, there are some fundamental qualities that are required. At the most basic level, you need to want to be a leader. This sounds obvious, but it is trickier than it appears. How much do you want to be a leader? You don’t really know the answer in advance. Maybe after 3 years of struggle and setbacks, you realise that it is not your calling. I have had people tell me: “I did not sign up for this s___.” Maybe not, but will you follow through on what you have started? You have to be careful what you ask for…you may get it.

Leadership is not about fairness. Don’t expect to be thanked for your efforts. With patience, you will see the result of your efforts grow and be shaped into something bigger than yourself. That is likely to be your reward. Leadership must be borne of an innermost desire that comes from a combination of determination, passion, perseverance, need for achievement, need to govern, and many other innate traits.
