Curiosity #1: Mobile communications
When I was thirteen years old, I went to Greenland. Twice. It wasn’t an ordinary tourist trip; it was a trip during the summer of 1978 when my parents didn’t know where to park me. My father was the captain of a merchant ship at the time, and I got the opportunity to travel with him back and forth between Denmark and Greenland.
Little did I know that the trip to Greenland would shape my interest in studying electrical engineering and communications later in life. The trip from Denmark to Greenland takes about one week on a merchant ship. You then spent one week sailing between ports with exotic names such as Godthaab (Good hope), Godhavn (Good harbour), Jakobshavn (Jakobs harbour), and Sukkertoppen (Sugar top). Then you take one week to head back across the North Atlantic. As a restless 13-year-old, I could roam freely about the ship, enjoy being served three meals every day in the officers’ canteen, and eat candy whenever I wanted.
